This is one of the hardest parts of the Bible.  The Apostle Paul reveals God's right to show mercy to whom he wants and to harden whom he wants.  This passage also reveals one question that God doesn't answer because we don't have the right to ask it.

This text undercuts our pride and the exaltation of our point of view.  The Bible answers many of the questions of life, and God encourages thinking and questioning.  But when it comes to challenging his right to do what he wants with his creation, you will find that you have unwittingly placed yourself on a privileged perch to make judgments on God--and in this passage you will discover how out of line that is.
