In this section of Romans Paul finally gets to the first exhortation or command for the reader: Consider yourself dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.  This follows an in-depth tour of the believer's union with Christ in his death and resurrection.

It is instructive that the first thing Paul tells us to do is "consider," or "reckon" ourselves dead to sin and alive to God.  This shows the importance of appropriating our new identity in Christ.  It also hints at the already/not yet nature of the Christian experience in this age.  We have glimpses of our future perfection in eternity as we taste the power of the age to come.
