This passage helps to bring perspective to daily Christian living.  Our lives are not lived out as just so many passing moments that we meander through.  God has established a course for the world and it is moving to a consumation at the end of this age.  Paul's exhortation to wake up comes from that sense of time--and the way God is shaping history.

The language of "putting off" sins and "putting on" virtues flows out of the benefits of the gospel of Jesus.  Because Jesus' grace enables us to put off sins and add virtues to our lives, God can command us to to stop downloading porn, hoarding our money, over-eating or yelling at our kids.  He has already empowered us to do so by his Spirit he has given to us.
