Suffering is a part of life and humans hate to suffer.  That is why pain management is a growing field.  Further, Christians suffer from persecution for their faith.  Paul the Apostle knew this better than anyone.  He had been beaten, imprisoned, stoned, whipped, and generally pushed around in every city where he preached.

So when Paul begins 2 Corinthians with a deep expression of the comfort God gives in times of pain and suffering, it should get our attention.  This message offers great encouragement to those who are suffering and provides insight into the role of prayer in helping each other be delivered from difficult situations.
