This is not about money

We are talking about money this month, along with teaching about Anchor's mission, core values, and vision.  Why?  Because it's not about money.  It's not about giving, either.  It's about stewardship, a foreign word to most of us.

To be a steward is to take care of somebody else's stuff.  I had a friend whose job was to take care of this rich guy's estate.  The crazy part was that my friend could use any of the stuff, borrow it, take it home, whatever.  The rich guy was nice that way.

But my friend always remembered who's stuff it was.

God gives us all things to enjoy.  He gives us talents, gifts, character traits, diligence to work hard and earn money.  They are not our talents, gifts, character traits or work ethic.  They are God's gift to us, that we are to steward.

And when it comes to money, God has given us the ability and opportunities to make it.  But that doesn't make it ours.  It's still God's (Psalm 24:1).

Our job is to use the money God has given us in the best way we can.  That makes us stewards of his stuff.  That should affect how we use his stuff and spend his money.
